Selecting the right technologies and materials for a specific project is much more complex than one would think. The latest discovery is not necessarily the best to use. The best solution is closely related to the specific project.

Let us think about a house made out of either stone or concrete: besides the obvious aesthetic difference, one should consider many other factors like: statics, earthquake resistance requirements, maintenance, type of insulation, running services (water/electricity/heating-cooling etc.)
The same could be said for the energy: gasoil, natural gas, electricity, geothermia, wind power, solar, or a combination of these?

There is no generic "best solution", but there could be a best solution for your specific case. Taking the right decision requires knowledge in several fields and a thorough analysis of the place and its use.
These issues are often overlooked and long term maintenance and costs are not taken in account.
